I returned in 2001 from a six week stay in Paris with images of two very different sorts: carousels and Ferris Wheels on the one hand, and pictures from the Pere Lachaise Cemetery on the other. As time passed I saw these increasingly as one body of work, and presented it that way at the Mezzanine Gallery in Wilmington in the spring of 2002. It occurred to me that the carousels aren’t really for children, just as the monuments aren’t really for the dead. Both are built and maintained by adults who are dealing with their own mortality.
